Frequently Asked Questions
What type of training does Teach East offer?
Teach East is a SCITT, which means most of your learning is “on the job”, in schools watching and learning from current teachers. Every Friday there is specific, evidence-informed training which focuses on the Initial Teacher Training Core Content and Teacher Standards.
This includes, amongst other aspects:
- Principles of effective teaching
- Cognitive Science
- Support for learners with additional needs
- Educational theory
- Lesson planning
- Curriculum design
SCITT courses are fantastic ways to learn because you get the support of weekly personalised training. You can get stuck in at school and help children to develop right from day one.
Teach East SCITT is also registered to offer the Post-Graduate Teacher Apprenticeship with QTS - get in touch via the Contact Us page to find out more about this employer-led route.
How much does Teacher Training cost?
The fees for Teach East are £9250 for the training year. You will be placed in two contrasting schools within or very close to Peterborough. You will also have access to high-quality training, mentoring and support. At the end of the academic year, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status as a Qualified Teacher!
In partnership with ARU, Teach East also offer trainees the chance to achieve a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCERT). This is an additional qualification which provides you with 60 Masters credits.
Do I need lots of school experience to apply?
Experience of working or volunteering in a school is not a requirement for the course. Some applicants would like to spend some time in a school, to gain an insight into what the life of a teacher entails. If you are struggling to arrange your own experience at a school, contact us and we may be able to help you.
Is there any support for funding?
In a word, yes! Many secondary subjects qualify for Government bursaries of up to £28,000. This is for completing your teacher training (click here for more details.)
Also, you can apply for student loans to cover the cost of your training. This means that you wouldn’t start paying anything back until you've secured employment.
Where will I train?
The home base of Teach East is now Manor Drive Secondary Academy in Peterborough. Manor Drive is a new school in the Four C's MAT of which Teach East SCITT is a part. Whilst the base is at Manor Drive, much of the training happens within other schools. This allows trainees to experience a wide range of settings and to understand the wide breadth of schools in Peterborough.
